| Thallus 2–6 (–10) cm wide, primarily monophyllous, less commonly polyphyllous, orbicular to irregular, rigid, occasionally with scattered irregular perforations; margins inrolled or ascending, incised or torn, occasionally becoming laciniate. Upper surface dull, smooth or minutely scabrid, pale to dark grey or brown-grey (rarely blackened towards margins), with a white necral layer often extending over the entire thallus surface, minutely radially or reticulately cracked to striate at the umbo; cracks disappearing at margins. Isidia and soredia absent. Lower surface smooth, dull, pale or dark grey, continuously or patchily covered with soot-like black thalloconidia; rhizinomorphs lacking. Thalloconidia single-celled, ±globose, (5–) 6–8 (–10) µm diam. Apothecia occasional, 0.5–2.5 (–4.5) mm diam., black, substipitate to stipitate; disc smooth, not gyrose (a leiodisc), with a persistent raised margin, rarely becoming convex, frequently superficially cracked. Ascospores simple, ellipsoidal, 10–15
(–20) × (3–) 5–9 µm, hyaline. Pycnidia laminal, predominantly towards the lobe margins. Conidia fusiform, 2.5–3.5 (–5.0) × 0.8–1.0 µm. CHEMISTRY: Medulla K–, C+ red, KC+ red, P–; containing containing gyrophoric acid (major), lecanoric acid (minor), ±umbilicaric acid (minor). |

| Occurs in N.S.W., A.C.T., Vic. and Tas.; grows on exposed rock faces or in crevices in mountainous areas, on boulders in grassland, or in open Eucalyptus forest or subalpine heath. Also in Europe, Asia, North America and New Zealand. | ||
